In this song Mac Miller and Kali Uchis play the role of twolovers in a challenging romance. And “time” has been recognized asthe primary issue in their relationship.

The stylistic range of left-field pop artist Kali Uchis is reflected in the variety of her collaborators - an extensive genre-crossing list that includes Tyler, the Creator, Gorillaz, Daniel Caesar, Juanes, and BadBadNotGood. A singer, songwriter, and producer, as well as a video director, Uchis truly arrived on her own with the self-released Por Vida (2015), an EP that led to a deal with.

From Kali’s perspective, she needs “time to grow” as anindividual, with the implication being that doing so would be at the cost oftheir relationship. However, she is very much in love and suffers withouther boo. Thus she is not overly-enthused at the prospect of terminatingthe romance. But at the end of the day, the union has its issues, as inUchis not being satisfied with the way it is progressing.

Meanwhile Mac has also identified “time to grow” assomething beneficial – yet more from a group perspective. He feels theyneed to develop together. Or put differently, he also understands that heneeds to mature as an individual. Yet he does not want to sacrifice hisrelationship with Kali in the name of doing so.

Thus the song ends where it began, with its primary singer, Kali Uchis, more or less lamenting the fact that she needs time to herself while simultaneously being in love with someone she cannot part ways with.
